From Year 7 to Year 13

Year 7 – Discover

Students begin their journey with curiosity, confidence and belonging.

They learn that art is far more than drawing pictures; it is about observing, questioning, experimenting and communicating ideas.

Projects such as Making Marks, Abstract Worlds, Identity, Global Creativity and Colour Power introduce the foundations of visual language whilst developing resilience, imagination and confidence.

Students learn how to:

• observe with increasing accuracy

• explore materials safely

• experiment without fear of failure

• speak confidently about artwork

• build subject vocabulary

• reflect on their own progress

• celebrate creativity in others

From the very first lesson, students understand what they are learning, why they are learning it and how success will be recognised.

Year 8 – Develop

Knowledge becomes deeper.

Students begin making increasingly independent creative decisions.

Projects move naturally from observational painting and printmaking into more ambitious personal responses, developing confidence across a wider range of media and approaches.

Students increasingly learn to:

• compare artists critically

• investigate visual culture

• experiment with greater purpose

• justify creative decisions

• work collaboratively

• develop resilience through challenge

Students begin recognising that successful artists rarely produce outstanding work first time. Improvement comes through reflection, refinement and persistence.

Year 9 – Create

Year 9 acts as the creative bridge between Key Stage 3 and GCSE.

Students begin taking genuine ownership of their work.

Projects become increasingly open-ended, allowing personal interests, experiences and ideas to influence creative outcomes.

Students develop:

• independent enquiry

• personal interpretation

• research skills

• cultural understanding

• visual communication

• confidence in presenting ideas

Support remains carefully structured, but independence steadily increases.

Every learner is encouraged to discover their own creative voice.

Year 10 – Becoming an Independent Artist

The GCSE journey begins by helping students understand how artists think rather than simply what artists produce.

Students explore the Journeys project, learning how GCSE assessment works whilst developing increasingly independent approaches to research, recording, experimentation and evaluation.

The emphasis shifts towards:

• sustained enquiry

• metacognitive thinking

• informed decision making

• personal responsibility

• reflective practice

• creative confidence

Students are introduced to the Assessment Objectives not as barriers, but as tools that help organise ambitious creative thinking.

High expectations are matched with high levels of support.

Year 11 – Refining Creative Practice

Students continue developing their sustained personal investigations.

Professional experiences, including specialist printmaking opportunities such as the Curwen Print Study Day, enrich practical understanding and broaden technical confidence.

Following the release of the AQA Externally Set Assignment, students build an individual response through investigation, experimentation, refinement and thoughtful decision making before completing the practical examination.

Students leave GCSE not simply with a qualification, but with the confidence to think independently, communicate visually and solve complex creative problems.

Years 12–13 – Creative Leadership

A Level transforms students from successful learners into independent creative practitioners.

Personal enquiry becomes central.

Students investigate complex themes, write critically, experiment confidently and produce increasingly sophisticated bodies of work that reflect their own interests and ambitions.

The emphasis is no longer simply on completing projects, but on developing an authentic creative identity.

Students learn to:

• question assumptions

• synthesise ideas

• evaluate critically

• communicate professionally

• curate exhibitions

• prepare portfolios

• present themselves confidently for university, apprenticeships and employment

Throughout the Journey

Every project has been carefully sequenced so that knowledge, technical skill, vocabulary, confidence and independence grow together.

The Art Barn curriculum balances:
